Black Cabin

Region: Icewind Dale — north of Lonelywood, above a gorge Type: Abandoned Structure Status: Cleared — Summer Star activated Former Occupant: Maseridis (deceased artificer)

Description

A black lodge on wooden stilts perched on a snowy ridge above a gorge. Broken windows, sagging roof, snow-covered walkways. Two rooms: a workshop and a burned room. The walkway boards were rotted — several party members fell or nearly fell during entry.

The cabin was the site of Maseridis’s death when the Summer Star orb exploded during one of his experiments. His ghost lingered here until the party fixed the orb and laid him to rest.

What Was Found Here

  • Workshop (Room 1): Tinker’s and smith’s tools; bookcase with a family of squirrels nesting in it
  • Burned Room (Room 2): Charred skeleton of Maseridis; the Summer Star orb (incomplete — missing third ring); the explosion killed Nalla and Dekyna instantly

The Summer Star

A weather-control orb built by Maseridis to stop the forever-winter. Required three containment rings — the third was missing and had to be forged on-site. Now held by Kelrick.

Ability: Control Weather (Level 8 spell), 1/day

Notable Events

  • Nalla and Dekyna were vaporized by the Summer Star explosion (87 radiant damage — exceeded max HP); existed as ghosts briefly
  • Kelrick forged the third ring using improvised tools; fixed the orb and attuned to it
  • First sunrise in years over Icewind Dale — Kelrick cast Control Weather from the cabin’s ledge
  • Maseridis’s ghost found peace; his spirit dissolved
  • All party members who helped lay Maseridis to rest gained Blessing of the Morning Lord (10 temp HP at dawn, permanent)
  • Nalla and Dekyna were resurrected per the cabin’s special rule (anyone who died in the last 24 hours restored to life when the spirit was laid to rest)
  • Post-resurrection: attacked by Cold Light Walkers and Ice Mephits angered by the sudden sun; party won

Loot Recovered

  • Amulet of Health (CON becomes 19; from Maseridis’s skeleton)
  • 4 barrels of Sweet Berry Summer Wine (Maseridis’s personal stash)
